In case you weren’t already aware, it’s almost Christmas! I could spend paragraphs upon paragraphs raving about how amazing snow is, and how cold weather is incredible, also how family and this season are my favorite things… but I won’t (given that I’m sure you’ve heard it from me, or like me already). But just so you know – I made sure to make the title of this post as a gentle reminder.
What have I been up to? To be perfectly honest: Books. Because I had gone on a book-bender-buying spree last week, I had a little problem. I really REALLY wanted to read Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. I had been wanting to read the brick of a book (it’s 800+ pages) – but I had just gotten at least three other books that I needed to read first. So this last week? It’s been mostly speed-reading in preparation for Hamilton. And boy – was it worth it… so much so that I have forgone the writing spree I was on earlier this month (Because reading is so indescribably beautiful and entrancing that when a really good one comes alone – there is time for nothing else.)
I find myself almost lost for words when I want to describe that book. The sheer amount of information and funny quips contained within the book itself would take another book to describe in full. The character, and fully realistic historical figure, Alexander Hamilton has as many vices as he has incredible qualities. His work ethic alone is so incredibly inspiring, that I find myself wanting to write furiously every day to the papers and help my fellow citizens make sense of our crazy country. And the creation of our government- it’s a whole other element that gives me a strong appreciation of how the different parts of the administration function together. I will save the other *probably* thousand words that I want to spew out in favor of this book… and read the Federalist Papers in the meantime.
In other news, I visited the US Embassy in central Berlin and learned that I could take the Foreign Service Exam for free whenever I want to. (This is also acting as a PSA for all of you located in Berlin) As you can imagine, I will be taking that as soon as I reread the Constitution… and remind myself how our government functions internally. There are some perks of the CBYX Program, it appears…
